TOSHPA donates Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) in Sierra Leone in July 2020
For six years now Toshpa has revamped the health sector in Sierra Leone.
We have worked across the various districts of Sierra Leone provisioning support to nurses and medical personnel. We provide hospital equipments and engage nurses for a healthier care in the communities.
Toshpa engages in raising awareness in schools and communities on teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Our health workers reach out to school administrations to facilitate learning of these topics from nurses and practitioners, allowing these children to ask questions which broadens their mind and also we encourage them to pass on the knowledge to their siblings and other friends who are not in school.
Following the mudslide disaster in Freetown,
TOSHPA sent a team of nurses who provided psychological support to victims of that disaster especially women and children. Amongst the team TOSHPA sent out were a qualified mental health nurse, a Registered General Nurses and a Psychotherapist who also provided relevant training and upskilling of their colleagues at the Kissi Mental Health facility, Connaught Hospital, and PCMH in Freetown.
TOSHPA undertook a health promotion campaign to Sierra Leone to educate the general population on diabetes, hypertension and teenage pregnancy in Freetown, Bo and Kailahun; including blood pressure and diabetes testing and information giving sessions held at the houses of parliament which was well attended and appreciated by the parliamentarians and other workers.
Following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, TOSHPA provided a large supply of relevant personal protective equipment (PPEs) including Veronica buckets, soap, gloves, and aprons to the healthcare workers in Congo Town, Kroo Bay, Marbella, and Susan’s Bay communities in Freetown to support the infection prevention and control initiative of the governmen.
In February 2020, TOSHPA adopted Ward No. 2 (a 22- bedded male ward) at the Bo Government Hospital with the aim of upgrading the ward environment, supply of much needed clinical equipment, medical supplies and training staff on current nursing practice to care for the patients that will be admitted to the ward. We transformed the ward from a derelict/abandoned state into a modern ward which currently is the best ward at that institution serving the community well. Though the adoption period was for one year, our organization has worked well with the hospital management team and it is our hope that when we hand the ward over to the hospital, the good work we have started will be sustained for the continued benefit of the people of Bo and its environments. TOSHPA also made a substantial donation of medical supplies sourced from trusted suppliers in the UK to hospitals in Freetown and Bo through government officials.
TOSHPA is now in discussion with the Connaught Hospital in Freetown to adopt Ward 6 which is a 28-bedded internal medicine ward. This adoption will be on similar lines as Ward 2 at the Bo Government Hospital which ended successfully in May 2021 with the handing over of new capacity 22 bedded ward for better care to patients.
Ward 6 was officially opened by the Minister of Health Dr Austin Demby.
TOSHPA members present were the Diaspora Officer Elizabeth Faley, Alice Campbell and Hectoria Thomas.
